Company History

The Cohen family’s roots in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning date all the way back to the 1930’s, where Sam Cohen owned a sheet metal shop in New Haven, Connecticut. Sam’s son Seymour, along with some other family members, then entered in the business in the 1940’s by starting American Supply which was a HVAC wholesale company in New Haven. In 1959, Seymour Cohen decided to go out on his own and founded The Star Supply Company at its original location of Olive Street and Water Street in New Haven, Connecticut. It was then that Seymour began cultivating strong relationships with customers in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts by providing reliable, high quality products and top-notch customer service. These were the building blocks for the foundation of loyalty on which The Star Supply Company stands.

In the 1960s, The Star Supply Company relocated to a larger warehouse and office space on State Street in New Haven. From there, Star Supply continued to grow by offering quality products, unmatched educational opportunities and technical assistance, as well as its first of many customer incentive programs, such as trips to tropical destinations. It was on one such incentive travel trip in 1984, that Seymour Cohen handed over the gavel of leadership to his son, Larry. Accompanying the passing of the gavel Seymour also passed his legacy and values down to his son, Larry.

The Company continues to promote proven products and services that contribute to expanding its already thriving customer base. This is evident by the Company's expansion into the refrigeration market in the 1980's and into the hydronics market in the 1990's. In the 1990's, The Star Supply Company partnered with Trane and Weil-McLain  as an independent distributor. In an effort to further expand our quality product offering during 2008, The Star Supply Company partnered with Daikin. The Star Supply Company has continued to succeed in these partnerships because of the high-quality products and beneficial programs available.

Driven by demand for increased inventory space to support growing product lines, preparation for transitioning to a bar-coded warehouse, and the need for more space to accommodate a growing company, The Star Supply Company moved. In 2006 the company's newest facility opened for business. Conveniently located at 118 Gando Drive in New Haven near I-91 and I-95, this location offers 165,000 square feet of office space, a state-of-the-art learning center, and a showroom and warehouse focused on customer convenience.

In March of 2015, Larry passed The Star Supply Company gavel and family legacy into the capable hands of the third generation of Cohens at the annual Trane Dealer Meeting in Hartford. Greg Cohen assumed the position of company President, following proudly in his father's and grandfather's footsteps. Prior to being named President, Greg had spent almost 15 years working behind the scenes at Star Supply in a multitude of positions, fine tuning how to best continue the forward progress and growth of the company, while staying true to the family legacies that are the cornerstone of the business.

In 2019 The Star Supply Company celebrated 60 years of family-owned business. Since then the company has worked to continue improving and adapting to current industry needs, while remaining true to the principles and legacies the company began with.

The Cohen family legacy is something we live by every day.
We check ourselves against these principles with every decision we make.

          • Provide industry leading customer service.
          • Hire and retain only the best people, whatever industry those people come from.
          • Dedicate ourselves to train each employee, and provide them with the tools to become the best they can possibly be at their position.
          • Utilize that training to allow our people to become a valuable resource to help our loyal customer base grow.
          • Attain high-end, proven equipment and supplies to offer our customer base, and be able to properly support every item we sell.
          • Build meaningful relationships with our customers and vendor partners that will help all of us to prosper over a long-period of time.
          • We like to believe that results of these principles speak for themselves.
